Prediabetes— What you need to know

Approximately 84 million American adults have prediabetes.Approximately 84 million American adults have prediabetes. Globally, over the past 40 years, the prevalence of diabetes has quadrupled.

Prediabetes is a serious health condition that is often overlooked. You may have prediabetes but do not experience symptoms.

It is important to get your blood sugar tested if you have any of the below risk factors.

  • Being over the age of 45
  • Having a close relative such as a parent, brother or sister with type 2 diabetes
  • having a low level of physical activity (less than 3 times a week)
  • Being overweight
  • Having had gestational diabetes
  • Giving birth to a baby that weighed more than nine pounds
  • Race and ethnicity are also risk factors. African Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, and some Asian Americans have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

Prediabetes vs diabetes

Prediabetes is not too difficult to live with. You may not even know you have it. However, if your condition deteriorates to type 2 Diabetes, every organ in your body becomes affected. Diabetes can lead to major health complications such as blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage and can lower life expectancy. Some studies indict diabetes increases risk for depression.

Type 2 diabetes is preventable with a few simple lifestyle changes

If you are overweight, reducing your weight by just 5 to 7 percent – only 10 to 14 pounds if you are 200 pounds will reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Regular physical activity- getting 150 minutes a week or just 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week will reduce your risk of diabetes.
